Romania, net beneficiary of relations with EU

Bucharest, Jan 20 / Agerpres / - Romania is a net beneficiary of relations with the European Union, with even more money to be attracted by the country in 2010 compared to 2009, when it received over 2.4 billion euros, participants in a symposium on the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon revealed on Thursday.

The European Commission Ambassador to Bucharest Nicolae Idu showed that European Union accession process is a complex one and that Romania will continue to receive substantial amounts under the pre-accession assistance. He also specified, in this context, that pre-accession assistance exceeds one billion euros this year.

'Government can only be a reflection of a more general situation of the country and when we talk about new concepts after 1990 - whether you talk about democracy, about market economy or about the absorption of EU funds - all these elements were adopted on a background that was built up before 1989. (...) We are talking about mentalities, which cannot be changed in a short time,' said Nicolae Idu.

Attending the debate, the head of Department for European Affairs Bogdan Manoiu said that a very important topic for Romania is the EU budget review and argued the importance of a balanced growth.

Over the future Common Agricultural Policy, he reiterated Romania would support the maintaining of the current structure, relying on the old pillars, with efficient mechanisms for ensuring the farmers an adequate standard of living and that it will promote the rural business development, once with keeping rural traditions.

In transport, said Bogdan Manoiu, Romania aims to make an axis in the direction north - south, to cross all member states between the Baltic and Black Sea, with possible extension to the southern border of the Union.

Another project in this area is represented by the development of river transport on the Danube, in the perspective of building the pan-European Corridor Danube - Main - Rhine, linking the Black Sea to the North Sea.

With respects of social policies, Romania must seek inclusion, workforce employment solutions, social protection and professional training. AGERPRES
