Romania: Pensioners sue Government
Bucharest, Jan 21 /Agerpres/ - The national council of the National Federation of Pensioners (FNPR) decided to sue the Government for failure to observe Law 250/2007, according to which the value of the pension point accounted for 45 percent of the gross average salary nationwide, FNPR president Preda Nedelcu told a news conference.
Pensioners say that this law was applied till April. Starting in April the pension point went down to 42 percent of the gross average salary nationwide and in October 2009 it grew to 43.2 percent. 'We do not accept the Prime Minister's proposal of freezing pensions for 2010. We request they should at least be indexed with the inflation coefficient,' says the trade union leader. Pensioners will take part in all protest actions organized by the trade union confederations, but they will also turn to the European Federation of Pensioners and Elderly People for support in presenting their claims to the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs. 'In no country were pensions frozen or diminished at a time of crisis,' says Preda. Pensioners also request that taxes on pensions should gradually be levied, that the fund necessary for supplying medicines to hospitals should be ensured, that Law 218/2008 on increasing the pension point for special work groups I and II should be applied, that the value of the pension point accounting for 45 percent of the gross average salary nationwide should go on being stipulated by the unitary pension law.
