Romania: Trade and employer unions in mass-media join efforts to save the press.
Bucharest, Jan 22 /Agerpres/ - Mass-media trade and employer unions ask the Government to urgently meet in order to examine the situation of the country's press sector, as well as the adoption of some measures aimed to save it, through a fiscal re-launch, debt rescheduling and cut of publicity tax.
'Solidarity must be the word order in mass-media. We must be united to secure survival of the press in Romania. We urge the Government to hold an emergency meeting, to examine the situation in the press sector all over the country', announced on Thursday Romedia president Vasiliu Teodor in a press conference.
Present in this event, Ioan Cezar Coaraci, president of UGIR-1903, confederation to which the employers union in the media is also affiliated, asked the Government to urgently adopt some measures to save the press in Romania through fiscal re-launch, employers' debts rescheduling, or through the publicity tax reduction.
'There are economic sectors in Romania rapidly disappearing, in case the state fails to intervene now. I refer to textiles, chemistry, steel and, last but not least, the press. The post-crisis economic world will be based on industrial activity and services, and not on banking speculations, as so far', pointed out Coraci.
Both mass-media trade and employers unions stated that, in case they will not receive a favorable answer from the Prime Minister, joint protests are to be launched both in the country, and internationally. Moreover, Romedia president announced in the conference on Thursday that, 'starting today, we have a representative of the employers union in the press at Brussels, in the Economic and Social Council, in the person of Cristian Unteanu'.
'A commission was formed dealing with the author rights within the Economic and Social Council and Eugen Opran, prime-vice president of UGIR-1903, is this commission's rapporteur', announced the representative of the media employers union to Brussels, Cristian Unteanu.
As well, the president of the Romanian Federation of Journalists (Mediasind), Cristi Godinac, welcomed the initiative to attract as many as possible press trusts to the employers union and voiced hope that they, together with the employees, will succeed to determine the Government to financially help the press in Romania and to save journalists' jobs.
