Romania: Minus 34.4 degrees Celsius at Intorsura Buzaului

Bucharest, Jan 25 /Agerpres/ - At Intorsura Buzaului, the Covasna County (northeast of Bucharest) on Monday morning were recorded 34.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature in the country.

According to meteorologists at the local station, at 7:20 a.m. the thermometre indicated minus 34.4 degrees C, this phenomenon resulting from a cold atmospheric front to keep forcefully in the next days.

The absolute record in the past half of century was set in 2004, when the local meteorological station froze at 36 degrees Celsius, a temperature level which wasn't registered since 1939.

The inhabitants of Intorsura Buzaului recall that in 1986 was a more ferocious frost, the thermometers indicating minus 40 degrees C at the ground level.

The locals have to bear differences of temperature of nearly 40 degrees between the inside and the outside, and the hot water they take out from their homes to water their stocks freezes almost instantly.

Seven counties in Romania are under the Orange code of frost, over Jan. 24, 2:00 p.m. - Jan. 27, 8:00 a.m. (Romania's time), according to a meteorological warning issued on Sunday by the National Meteorology Administration (ANM).AGERPRES
