Romania: President Basescu: A European country by tradition cannot be outside Europe

Chisinau, Jan 27 - AGERPRES correspondent Cornel Ciobanu reports: Romania's President Traian Basescu reiterated during the meeting on Wednesday, in Chisinau, with the Moldovan Premier, Vlad Filat, Romania's backing for the Republic of Moldova in its intention to join the European Union.

Traian Basescu said that Romania will attentively follow the evolution of relations between the Republic of Moldova and the EU and gave assurances that Bucharest is to support the efforts of Chisinau authorities in the European integration process. 'A European country by tradition cannot be outside Europe', pointed out Romania's President, according to a release issued by Chisinau Government.

Traian Basescu also referred to the visit paid by Prime Minister Vlad Filat to Bucharest, in November 2009. Romania's President stated that, currently, the authorities work for the implementation of the accords concluded on that occasion.

Vlad Filat thanked the Romanian side for finalizing the legal procedures of implementation of the small border traffic accord, noting the significance of this document for the Republic of Moldova. Within the meeting he stressed that all the technical procedures related to the implementation of the said accord will be carried out by the established deadlines. The sides also approached aspects connected to the opening of the Romanian consulates in Cahul and Balti, the intention to open a consular office in Ungheni, the opening of Radauti-Lipcani bridge, the implementation of some cross-border projects etc.

Vlad Filat said that some of these issues were discussed during his visit to Bucharest. 'We already succeeded to implement some of them. We have to make all efforts in order to fully implement all our accords', said the Moldovan Premier, voicing conviction that Traian Basescu's visit to Chisinau will further give an impetus to the bilateral relations.
