Romania wins three medals in Nordic ski and biathlon world championships

Bucharest, Feb 1 /Agerpres/ - Romanian athletes have recorded a first in the history of winter sports by winning three medals, one in the International Biathlon Union Youth/Junior Championships in Torsby, Sweden, and two in the U23 Nordic World Championship, the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports reported in a press release on Monday.

The Romanian athletes have so far won two gold medals and one silver medal, outperforming athletes from countries with long winter sports traditions, including Norway and Russia.

At the weekend, Reka Ferencz won the first gold in the history of Romania's biathlon, in the Junior Women 12.5 Km individual event, clocking in at 42:05.1.

Reka started practicing biathlon in 1999, when she was 10. For two years now, she has been a member on Romania's national team. Her personal best before Torsby was the 4th place in the 2009 Canmore sprint ski event. She has been selected to run in the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, February 12-28.

The second world title for Romania was won on Saturday, January 30, by Paul Constantin Pepene, who came in first in the 15-km pursuit race of the U23 Nordic Junior World Ski Championship at Hinterzarten, Germany. The 22-year-old Bran native finished the race at 1:24:45.6, advancing to the Vancouver Olympic Games.

Romanian Petrica Hogiu won the silver in the 20-km pursuit race of the same championship. Hogiu, 19, started on the 16th position and ended the race in 57 minutes and 35 seconds. He is also part of Romania's team to compete in Vancouver. AGERPRES
