Romania: Social Democrats elect leading team in Extraordinary Congress.
Bucharest, Feb 20 /Agerpres/ - Over 1,700 Social Democrats elect their new leading team on Saturday during the Extraordinary Congress to be held in Bucharest.

For the first time in the history of this party nine candidates will compete for the position of chairman and 62 for the position of vice-chairman. There are only three aspirants to the position of general secretary: current general secretary Liviu Dragnea, Constantin Nicolescu, leader of the branch of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Arges County (southern Romania), and Dumitru Buzatu, leader the the PSD branch in Vaslui County (eastern Romania).

The leading team will be elected in keeping with the 2005 PSD Statutes. Another congress will be convened for amending the above-mentioned document, most probably this autumn.

Current PSD leader Mircea Geoana will compete against two vice-chairmen of his team, Victor Ponta and Cristian Diaconescu, as well as against his general secretary, Senator Miron Mitrea. Mayor of Constanta (south-eastern Romania) Radu Mazare, Senate counsellor Andrei Alexandru, Dorela Alistar, member of the PSD branch of sector 1, Bucharest), Ioan Domonco, a teacher from Dorohoi (northern Romania), and Victor Moraru, mayor of the town of Amara, Ialomita County (southern Romania), also aspire for the position of chairman.

The first to get the best results will be voted for in a second round of voting. AGERPRES
