Romania: Social Democrats to choose their leadership at extraordinary Congress convention.
Bucharest, Feb 20 /Agerpres/ - More than 1,700 Social Democrats are electing today the new leading team of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) at an extraordinary convention of the PSD Congress in Bucharest.
For the first time in the history of the party, nine candidates will vie for the party's chairmanship and 62 for 15 deputy chairman offices. Running for the office of PSD secretary general are only three candidates: incumbent secretary general Liviu Dragnea; chief of the PSD Arges county branch Constantin Nicolescu, and chief of the PSD Vaslui county branch Dumitru Buzatu.
The leadership will be elected in accordance with the party's 2005 statutes. Another convention of the PSD Congress is expected to be called most likely for this autumn to modify the party's statutes.
Incumbent PSD chief Mircea Geoana will be challenged by two deputy chairmen of his own team Victor Ponta and Cristian Diaconescu, and also by former PSD secretary general Miron Mitrea, currently a PSD senator. Also running against him are Constanta Mayor Radu Mazare; senatorial adviser Andrei Alexandru; PSD Bucharest District 1 member Dorela Alistar; professor Ioan Domonco of Dorohoi and mayor of the town of Agigea Victor Moraru.
The two best ranked contesters will face off in a second ballot.AGERPRES
