MAE: New round of Romanian-Polish strategic dialogue on security matters.

Secretary of State for Bilateral and Strategic Affairs in the Euro-Atlantic Space George Ciamba participated on Tuesday in Warsaw, alongside Secretary of State for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations with the National Defence Ministry Mircea Dusa, in the seventh round of the Romanian-Polish strategic dialogue on security matters, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Poland.

The Polish delegation was headed by Bartosz Cichocki, Undersecretary of State with the Foreign Ministry, and Tomasz Szatkowski, Undersecretary of State with the Defence Ministry, according to a Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

In regards to NATO, there has been highlighted the importance of continuing the full implementation of the measures decided upon at the Warsaw Summit, with Romania and Poland further granting a special attention to the measures of consolidating the defence and deterrence postures on the eastern flank. In this respect, the two states will continue the close coordination in the perspective of the allied summit this summer, having indicated in context the usefulness of the bilateral dialogue formats, as well as of the regional ones, such as the B9 Bucharest format, the release shows.

According to MAE, the Romanian side stressed the 2 percent of the GDP allotment to defence, according to the commitment assumed at the NATO Summit in Wales.

The officials hailed the launch of the permanent structured cooperation (PESCO), underscoring the importance of the principles of transparency, solidarity and balanced approach, as well as of the complementarity with NATO in conducting this initiative.

During the consultations there have also been assessed the interest aspects on a regional level, with a focus on the situation in Ukraine, as well as that of the developments in the Black Sea area, mainly in the Crimean Peninsula.

Moreover, they reviewed the current and in perspective priorities within the OSCE, the two sides agreeing on a closer cooperation on mutual interest topics in the area.

The Common Declaration on the Romanian-Polish Strategic Partnership was signed on 7 October 2009. The establishment of the Strategic Partnership was decided following the common interests of the two states on a bilateral, European and international level. Moreover, it was taken into account that Romania and Poland ensure the security of great part of the EU and NATO external border, MAE also points out.

The dialogue on security matters format includes representatives on a level of secretary of state with the Foreign and Defence ministries. The first round of the Romanian-Polish strategic dialogue on a level of secretary of state / deputies of Foreign and Defence ministers, under the aegis of the bilateral Strategic Partnership, took place in Warsaw, in March 2012, being followed by several rounds of consultations: Bucharest (October 2012), Warsaw (March 2013), Bucharest (April 2014), Warsaw (January 2015) and Bucharest (September 2016).
